The Palestinian Liberation Organization, whilst proving to have little effectiveness in accomplishing their aims in the period of 1964-1974, had a significant and enduring effect on the events in the Middle East. Created in 1964 on the initiative of Egyptian president Nasser, the PLO would soon become one of the most influential bodies of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Born out of a desire to liberate the Palestinian homeland in an ‘armed struggle’, it was largely responsibly for the fedayeen raids that contributed to the outbreak of the 1967 war. Following the 1967 war, Palestinian nationalism grew, and a stronger sense of identity emerged. As such, the formation of the PLO, and their ear ly involvements in the 1967 war, proved it to be a fairly influential participant of the conflict in the Middle East. The aftermath of the 1967 marked a turning point and evolution in the responses of the PLO, which was to have substantial effects on the conflict. The 1967 war resulted in over 40% of Palestinians living under Israeli rule, following the capturing of the West Bank and Gaza. This convinced the Palestinians that the liberation of their land, lay in their own hands. Palestinian historian Khalidi comments that his people were â€Å"dealt with as refugees, rather than as a people with national rights.† As a result, raids into Israeli territories under the PLO intensified, as Palestinian nationalism and identity ensued. After 1967, the existing leadership of the PLO and their methods of conventional warfare were discredited. Ernest Hemingway is one of the greatest writing icons of the early to mid 20th century. Known mainly for his success in writing the critically acclaimed novel, The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway had many symbolic meanings instituted throughout this novel and many other works. Many having the theme of a hero confronting a natural force, as seen when Santiago confronts the mighty sea. Along with the heroic themes, Hemingway had become a religious Catholic man growing up and decided to include many religious references and biblical allusions. Since the beginning of his writing career, he has been putting these allusions and important uses of the bible into his work. Critics of these works such as, The Old Man and the Sea, have discovered and have been aware of these references and parallels for some time. Compare and contrast how Seamus Heaney and Carol Ann Duffy Essay Compare and contrast how Seamus Heaney and Carol Ann Duffy have described the ending of childhood innocence in Death of a Naturalist and In Mrs Tilchers class.  Introduction  To answer this question I will look at the poetic features of each poem. Each poem I am going to talk about focuses on the loss of childhood innocence.  The two poems I am going to talk about are different from each other as Death of a Naturalist by Seamus Heaney is a dull scary type of poem. In Mrs Tilchers class by Carol Ann Duffy seems less of fear and more uplifting then changes to shame at the end of the poem,  But stared at your parents, appalled  Both poems end negatively.  Each poet comes from a different upbringing. Seamus Heaney is from Northern Ireland and lived in a farm where he collected frogspawn. This poem reminded you more of what you did outside school during your free time as I did that a lot when I was younger. I loved playing in the fields with friends and finding frogspawn was a great experience. Carol Ann Duffy represented school in the greatest way possible because as I was it, it reminded me so much of my primary school days. Duffys upbringing was different from Heaneys which you can tell from her poem. She was born in Glasgow and then moved to Liverpool. Her poem is more indoor than outdoor and a great image of what her life was like in primary school is told in this poem.  In my own childhood experience I find that both poems reminded me of what I did in school and in my free time. Reading these poems brought me back to when I was once a young child. Coursework main piece!  Each poets backgrounds are different from each other. Seamus Heaney is from Northern Ireland and had a rural upbringing on the other hand Carol Ann Duffy was born in Glasgow and probably had a more urban upbringing.  Duffys poem is her own personal experience which makes us know how she felt in the classroom. Heaneys poem probably is one of his own experiences because he lived in a farm where he would have collected frogspawn. I think poems were influenced by their own childhood experiences and were described with great detail. Both poems describe the ending of childhood innocence in different ways. At the start of Duffys poem it seems more calm and happy,  Mrs Tilcher chanted the scenery  It seems like a more calm and colourful room which made you feel warm and make you smile,  The classroom glowed like a sweetshop.  Heaneys poem seems more dull and doesnt give you a nice image,  Flax had rotted there  The word rotted gives you an ugly image of something old and dirty been there for ages. It also makes you feel uncomfortable as you read it,  Daily it sweltered in the punishing sun  The word punishing gives you a very unhappy feeling and makes you think of pain. A similarity in the poem is that they both mention frogs and tadpoles. These types of images may be sent innocently at first between two people, but once they are â€Å"out there† there is no control over the number of people who will be able to view them and internet predators may use this as a blackmailing tool. As computers and the internet play a big part in our childrens’ education they will be using them more and more for homework and projects. Making sure a child knows how to use search engines is vital. They need to know that not everything they read on the internet is true, and that they need to form their own ideas and opinions and not simply copy what someone else has written. As parents it is our responsibility to know how the devices our children are using work, how to install firewalls and filters, and privacy settings and know what games they are playing and websites they are visiting. Finding out what children already know is a good place to start as most kids will enjoy showing off their computer skills. Ask them to think about the consequences of giving out too much personal information. We need to use a balanced approach to educating them about the risks of using the internet while helping them to get the best out of it.

Alois Alzheimer was a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist and he first described it in 1906. The disease was first thought to be a rare condition affecting only young people, and was referred to as presenite dementia. About 10 percent of the United States population over the age of 65 is affected by Alzheimer's disease, and up to 45 percent of those over the age of 85 may have the disease. Up to 2 million people suffer from it, or one percent of the population. During the early stages of the disease, a person forgets daily events, but they can still recall things that happened many years ago. Memory loss worsens during the later stages of the disease, when patients forget events from earlier years, patients cannot care for themselves, and some patients can become bedridden. Most patients die from infection or chronic disease 8 to 10 years after getting the disease. The cause of Alzheimer's disease still remains mysterious. People with a family history of the disease though, have a better chance of getting it themselves. Carriers of a specific version of the apolpoprorein E gene (apo E gene) are more likely to develop the disease. Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed by examining brain tissue under a microscope to see hallmark plaques and tangles, which is only possible after the patient dies. There are some ways that you can find out if you have the disease when you are alive, but it might not be 100 percent sure. You rule out other problems that could cause memory loss like a stroke, depression, alcoholism, and the use of certain prescription drugs. A thorough examination, which includes specialized brain scans is another way of diagnosing it. A patient could be given an evaluation called a neuro pschological examination. There is no known cure for Alzheimer's disease. Treatment focuses on lessening symptoms and attempting to slow the course of the disease. Drugs that increase or improve the function of brain acetylcholine, and the neurotransmitter that affects memory, have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to help treat Alzheimer's disease. Preliminary studies say that anti-inflammatory drugs could prevent inflammation. There is evidence that the female hormone estrogen, may prevent or slow down the course of the disease. Coping with a loved one's decline and inability to recognize familiar faces causes extreme pain.
